Things to do in Cheltenham
Cheltenham offers something for everyone of all ages and tastes, from a mix of traditional and modern culture, to the eye-catching splendour of the Regency architecture. You will find plenty of things to do both indoors and outdoors - paint your own pottery, take to the water at the boating lake in Pittville Park and visit the 1930s style outdoor lido. Relax with a gentle stroll in the beautiful parks and gardens, try the fabulous shopping, or just sit and enjoy a coffee at one of the many cafés and restaurants and watch the world go by.
Sudeley Castle & Gardens
Award winning gardens and medieval ruins surround Sudeley Castle, which sits nestled in the Cotswold Hills on the edge of the historic town of Winchcombe. The extensive gardens have been lovingly restored and designed to reflect the Castle’s fascinating past and enhance the historic moments and romantic stories held by the building’s old stones. The gardens are an ever evolving showcase with tulips prevailing in Spring and roses reigning supreme all summer long, before the tender plants of autumn come into their own.
Opened in 1825, Pittville Park is the largest ornamental park in Cheltenham and features the magnificent Pump Room and lakes. This park is given a grade 2 listing under the English Heritage register of historic parks and gardens, with the Pump Room as a grade 1 historic building.
The Hare and the Minotaur
The sculpture was initially part of a temporary exhibition of the work of Gloucestershire based artist Sophie Ryder at the Cheltenham Museum and Art Gallery and it was created in 1995. The overwhelming public response to the exhibition fuelled the campaign to retain one of Sophie Ryder’s sculptures and the Hare and Minotaur was acquired by public subscription in 1998.
